A high-quality transitional housing program teaches clients the importance of daily self-care and wellness. Within the sober living environment, clients learn and practice self-care fundamentals such as getting enough sleep, exercising, eating nutritious foods, and engaging in holistic education. The program also focuses on implementing coping strategies to address depression, anxiety, negative emotions, and irrational thoughts, helping clients build a solid foundation for long-term recovery

 

Cooking Meals

A high-quality transitional housing program will teach clients how to create meal plans, shop for groceries, and prepare their own meals. At Empowerment House, clients are required to buy their own groceries and cook their meals, allowing them to practice and refine these essential skills while developing a personalized system that suits their needs.

  

Setting and Achieving personal goals

A high-quality transitional housing program supports clients in setting and achieving goals, which can counteract the sense of hopelessness often resulting from long-term substance abuse. Establishing goals helps maintain progress and prevents relapse. Examples of constructive goals include:

  • Opening a savings account.

  • Volunteering with a community organization.

  • Submitting three job applications each week until securing employment.

 

Maintaining a

clean-living space

A high-quality transitional housing program teaches clients how to keep their living space clean, making it easier for them to transition back home, especially if they have family. Additionally, clients learn to respect and consider the needs of others while living in a sober environment, addressing the challenges of shared living and fostering a cooperative and respectful atmosphere.

This responsibility provides them with valuable practice in budgeting, saving, and planning for future expenses, preparing them for financial independence.

A high-quality transitional housing program supports clients in adapting to their new sober life, including helping them understand that their family and friends will also need to adjust. Regardless of how loved ones react, it's crucial for individuals in recovery to focus on:

  • Clear communication

  • Expressing emotions

  • Active listening

  • Identifying and managing triggers in social situations

A high-quality transitional housing program teaches clients the importance of time management, such as using a daily planner to organize their schedule. This helps prevent boredom and reduces the risk of relapse. Additionally, clients receive support in creating a personalized relapse prevention plan.

A high-quality transitional housing program aids clients in securing employment by teaching them job-search skills. This includes filling out applications, creating or updating resumes, using online job resources, and presenting themselves effectively in interviews.
