One of the purpose of April being Alcohol Awareness month is to educate the public especially young adults about alcoholism, treatment, and prevention. For young adults, early education about the impact alcohol can have on their lives is one of the most critical components in the prevention of alcoholism.
Underage alcohol use is on the rise in the United States and statistics point to an alarming trend of alcohol consumption among children as young as nine. Approximately 3 million adolescents between the ages of 14 and 17 regularly consume alcohol and more than 100,000 12- to 13-year-old binge drink each month. It is estimated that 40 percent of children who begin consuming alcohol before the age of 15 will become alcoholics at some point in their lives.
Alcohol consumption is one of the leading causes of injury and death among teenagers, and its statistics such as these that have made a focus on underage drinking such a priority during this year’s alcohol awareness month. While these statistics are a cause for concern, experts agree that the best deterrent to underage drinking is parental influence. Talking with your children about the dangers of alcohol use has a profound impact on their choices. Research suggests that adolescents and teens are 50 percent less likely use drugs and alcohol when their parents have discussions with them surrounding the dangers and risks associated with use. While there is no singular method that works effectively for every child, it is important to engage them in meaningful discussion.

Why we are here
Overdoses in New Jersey are up 20% so far this year compared to the same time period in 2019, said Health Commissioner Judith Persichilli. So far, there have been 1,339 suspected overdose deaths this year.
Why Empowerment House Exist?
Sober Living homes are increasingly viewed as a viable and cost-effective alternative to established recovery-oriented systems of care. Sober Living homes are a good alternative because they provide safe and healthy environments that support clients in their recovery. Empowerment House empowers clients by providing support as they transition towards living independent and productive lives in their respective communities. Empowerment House offer a unique alternative to harm reduction, an essential component for individuals whose main goal is to find a sober living environment.
How Effective Are Sober Living Homes?
Studies indicate that living in sober living homes after inpatient treatment increases recovery rates, financial strengthen and overall stability. An American Journal of Public Health study compared individuals who lived in a sober living home to those who only received outpatient treatment or attended self-help groups. A study published in the Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment found sober living home residents experienced improvements in arrest rates, alcohol and drug use rates, and employment rates. The authors found evidence that self-help groups, wellness programs attendance, and social support systems were key components of recovery for residents. A variety of other studies have also found that sober living homes appear to be an effective component of the recovery process.
After one year, those who resided in a sober living home:
- Were less likely to abuse drugs or alcohol.
- Made a higher average income.
- Were less likely to be incarcerated or reincarcerated.
- Reconnected with Family
- Created a stronger support network
